Sony will not allow pr0n on teh BD (Blu-Ray Disc) but HD-DVD will, plus the adult film industry even said they support HD-DVD.

There was one company who said they would like to work with the industry but are afraid Sony will yank their Blu-Ray licenses.

Porn has been the driving factor behind all kinds of video technologies including VHS along with much of the infrastructure of the internet. Porn clips were the original large files people were trying to download.

If it wasn't for porn we wouldn't have cable modems, dsl or fios (not like we've got it here, but I can dream.... can't I???)

so......

Long live the pron!!!!!!..... and death to blu-ray!!!!

sony lost out with beta b/c the porn industry moved to vhs, even though beta was the better format. looks like it's gonna be the same way with blu-ray. sony better start listening to the the porn industry.

I think there is still some on my hard drive from QC'06 but may have deleted a good chunk of it due to how much space was being used. That was some high quality stuff btw. I especially liked the Pirates one, I thought it was the movie (part II) and turned out to be a pr0n flix.

Unfortunately, I believe BluRay is a gonner for many more reasons than just pr0n. Unfortunate, because it is the better format, just like beta was.

Another reason is because Blu-Ray drives will not play good old fashioned DVDs. HD-DVD will.

Hell there are a number of reasons I can name off that will be the demise of Blu-Ray but talking about pr0n being one of them is just fun and funny.

I hope to God BluRay dies. I hate how Sony always wants to pull the non-backward compitable routing on DVD owners. Typical Sony "try to control the market" at our expense concept.

I think its admirable to try and get a completely new standard and not have to dick with backwards compatibility. I can think of many examples of new hardware, software, etc. that said fuck you to yesterday and forged ahead with new technology that not only made itself way better, but kept a hold of its market. I can think of Windows for a small example of software. They tried for years to keep 16 bit users happy. The only reason they are where they are now is they decided to say fuck you to 16-bit users. Same with memory. How many PC-100 memory sticks can you use in your DDR2 motherboard? You think the speed would be there if they had to build a memory controller that was backwards compatible with PC-100 memory? How many APG video cards will work in your PCIe motherboard? Remember the faild attempts at making a motherboard with both PCIe and AGP?

eh, that's a little different...

when you've bought lots of DVDs and they can't be played in a blu-ray player, that's a big problem. it requires you to keep your outdated hardware around longer than you want. and when that breaks, and dvd players aren't sold anymore, then what?

that's what's genius about the wii -- it can play GC games, hook up GC controllers, and play older nintendo games by downloading them. that's brilliant!

I dont think its different at all. You had to buy new memory when you upgraded didnt you? You cant use all your old RAM laying around. How many VHS tapes dod you have that can fit into the DVD slot in your DVD player? You probably have a separate VHS tape player to play all your old VHS movies you have from a long time ago.

backwards compatibility is more important in data formats than in nominally disposable bits of silicon.

that'd be like microsoft word 2009 introducing a completely brand new format and ditching support for everything other than the Word2009 format, leaving your older word documents useless, the way that a three foot pile of 50 dollar bills isn't.

how does that relate to my DVD/VHS comparison?

DVD was a completely new format compared to VHS, even down to the physical media, so this BR backwards compatibility hogwash doesnt do it for me. Just because the media is the same physical size doesnt mean it has to be able to play your old shit.

You can still have a DVD player and a BR player just like you probably have a VHS player, and why not? My AV switching 7.1 surround sound receiver can accept many different AV inputs and output it to my TV in HD.

Edit, oh and I dont know about you, but I spent more than $50 on this heap of unusable memory laying around my house collecting dust. Infact my first memory upgrade I can remember was for my 386 I went from 1MB to 4MB and it cost me $200 then I had to throw it away when I upgraded my computer.

But you're talking about DVD and VHS as a video format.

CDROM / DVD / HD-DVD / BD are all usable as data, video, and audio formats. VHS is not.

If a salesman came to me at work and said "Hey, we've got this new tape carousel we'd like to demo for your mainframe, and we can fit 1TB per tape. But oh by the way it's not backwards compatible with your old tapes so you'll have to ditch them," I'd call security and have that madman escorted out the front door, with weapons drawn.

What do you propose, that every 5-7 years we go ahead and go through the processes of:
Convert our personal old format movies to the new format
Throwing out the old format footage
Throwing out our old format movies
Buying new format movies to replace the old ones
Throwing out our old format music
Buying new format music to replace the old ones
Backing up all of our data from all of our old format data discs
Throwing out our old format data discs
Creating new data discs in the new format

??

I'd need to take two weeks of vacation to do all that.

Plan B:
Tell BD to get fucked, and go with the product that has backwards compatibility.

Which sounds more feasible?

edit: fixed some spelling
