We may all be using AMD's in the future.

Most of what I'm finding is that this is more a miscommunication issue than an actual issue. Stuff I've found (saw this article earlier today and poked around for a bit) seems to think that the chips in question here are actually intended for tablet/low end OEM machines only.

Updated 11/26/12@3:25pm: "One point to add, two OEMs have confirmed to SemiAccurate that they have now been briefed that Broadwell is BGA only. This was done weeks after we first told them about the problem."

That part has my attention.

Cliff notes? Intel will only sell their processors permanently attached to a intel branded motherboard.

That would mean desktops will lag one cycle behind with Haswell. Next chip we would see after that would be Sky Lake.

That would be a first, if what you say is true.

That's actually what I've been seeing, they're going to do Broadwell tablet/OEM only, leave Haswell as the primary desktop chip, while continuing to release higher clocked version of it but not an actual new chip until SL.

Cliff notes: Haswell comes out before Broadwell. Broadwell is replacing Atom, desktop socketed CPUs will stagnate mildly for a cycle (Using Haswell w/ only minor clock updates, no major fab changes) before Sky Lake releases.

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/intel_says_company_committed_sockets2012

The short of it:

"Intel remains committed to the growing desktop enthusiast and channel markets, and will continue to offer socketed parts in the LGA package for the foreseeable future for our customers and the enthusiast DIY market,” Intel spokesman Daniel Snyder told Maximum PC. This doesn’t necessarily mean that we won’t see more of the 14nm-permanently-soldered-to-the-mobo chips in the future, but at least it’s looking like we’ll have the option to avoid them with the disdain they deserve among those of us who like to rip the guts out of our machines and mess with them."
