budget?

Right now I highly recommend the Phenom II X4s, 8GB DDR2-800, and a Radeon 4870.

PhII X4s are excellent and very OC'able and you can get used 4870s for $100.

Budget is as little as possible. Smile

Need mobo, ram, vid card, DVD thingy & HD. Can prbably get a case locally with a PS or re-use my Lian Li.

Prefer mobo to have all sound/LAN etc onboard.

I missed Ray's steal of a PC below. Sad That was a killer deal!

get a raptor HD! Those things aren't in your budget but are worth the price because you can load up fast and pick the red team every time in TF2!!

4850 for $82.99 after MIR

If you're not running 1920x1200 then the 4870 is probably a little overkill for now. Also the 1tb WD Black drives are EXCELLENT, they beat all of my 74gb raptors in read and write both but if you're looking for a big, fast drive the 640gb Black is slightly faster and $35 cheaper.

Those two concessions drop the price by $100 and you won't have lost anything at 1680x1050 res. If you're running higher than that I'd suggest a 1gb 4870 instead.

P.S. Why 2 optical drives? That's another $28.99 you can drop off the price.

EDIT: Another bone to pick would be the 8gb kit of memory, no game for the next 2 years is going to use more than 2gb of RAM at any given time, 4gb is sufficient and 2 DIMMs vs. 4 DIMMs is going to keep everything more stable if it's OC'ed.

Seagate's 7200.12 perpendicular drives are within a few meg a second of the velociraptor drives and drastically cheaper. Around $110 for a 1TB I think.

VelociRaptors are quite a bit faster, old school raptors are just about equal with the new 7200.12. The other benchmarks show further distance between the WDs and the Seagate, but this is the most relevant to the thread.

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2009-3.5-desktop-hard-drive-charts/PCMark-Vantage,1019.html

It's worth noting that they don't have the 1tb Black listed in that benchmark since it hadn't come out at that point yet, but it sits just barely behind the 640gb Black. The 300gb VelociRaptor as well wasn't in the list, but it sits just barely ahead of the 150gb VR in terms of performance.

In actual gaming you're not going to see much difference between the Raptors, the Blacks and the 7200.12s unless you put a RAID0 together where the Raptors will pull ahead.

Not to mention the shear cost difference.

Also: Avg. Read Throughput
Seagate 7200.12 = 104.37MB/s
WD Velociraptor VR150 = 103.63MB/s

Avg. Read Throughput
WD Velociraptor VR150 = 103.21MB/s
Seagate 7200.12 = 102.90MB/s

This is what I was talking about. I'd rather see actual speeds than benchmark scores. When you take into account the fact that speed wise you won't see much difference, but pricewise there is a HUGE difference. I think it's pretty obvious what the better choice is for a budget.

Seagate 7200.12
1TB = ~$110
500GB = ~$75

WD VR150
300GB = ~$270

I'd rather be slightly slower but still completely functional and have a vastly larger amount of storage myself.

Nik, not trying to argue with you or say you're wrong. Just that he's not wanting to spend tons of money and the WD VR drives have NEVER been economical. I will agree though, if they were cheaper and had a higher storage capacity, they'd be great. But they're almost $1 per GB, which is way too much. Though I'd love to have their seek times, it stomps the snot out of the Seagate drive in that regard.

Yeah, I probably emphasized the VRs too much. My point was that the WD Blacks are faster than the Seagate 7200.12s and they're the same price.

2 opticals because i noticed BDROM drives were cheap. he might want to burn a DVD, too.

RAM: VMs,man, VMs.
I went half-general purpose with it. No sense building a computer that's only good for gaming and not really useful anywhere else! Very Happy

That AM3 mobo and DDR3 should keep you an available upgrade path for a while. Intel is all over the freakin place with their new socket/processors, integrated memory controller, integrated video controller shit.
