stolen debit card number - HELP!?  Reply with quote

What is the best way to report fraudulent charges that are emptying out my bank account on a holiday when my bank is closed?

There are a lot more but they all look like this.

bank is closed

I got in touch with the issuer and they placed a block on all further charges (thus protecting the $19 in the account) but nothing else can be done until tomorrow.

That is harsh man. Looks like a teenager has it, ccbill = porn most likely. Music and software for a phone, and porn. Sounds like someone in their teens - twenties.

It will be worth the theft if a) i get my money back and b) the person dies of some terrible dick infection.

Or if they will just let me visit with them for about 30 minutes.

Makes sense to run up someones card on a holiday. Bank is closed and the card holder isn't likely to be paying attention.

If it's a Visa or MasterCard Debit Card it will be protected and you'll get your money ack, BUT it can take awhile...

My wife works at a State Farm agent and she said if you have a home owners policy you shoullld check with your agent about your loss. They often have some amount of coverage built in on your home owner policy for fraud and credit card theft.

\beginGratuitousAd: If they don't, dump them and call her at Rod Chew State Farm - (405) 751-0440 and ask for Kathleen. \endGratuitousAd

My girlfriends check card number was being used in Phoenix over a weekend at retail locations. They were actually swiping a card and hers was safe in her wallet. Upon notification Visa put the money back instantly and all she had to do was sign a form they mailed that said she had nothing to do with it.

Yah, like has been said, that really sux, but if its visa, then you're covered. Doesn't help in the mean time when your account is empty tho. If ya need me to paypal ya 20 bux or something I'd be happy to help ya out.

I had a friend who's card had been used all over Sidney Australia to buy electric guitars, amps, music, etc. She's never been out of the USA... heh. All she had to do was sign something and she got her money back as it was pretty clear she had not taken the red-eye to aus, bought a bunch of crap, and returned to the US all in a day. I'm really impressed you were so quick to see what was going on. I think my first knowledge of this kind of thing would be me trying to pay for something and getting declined.

I'm a little concerned to see a knowledgeable computer kinda guy get his numbers stolen. I kinda thought that with any computer sence and knowing whats out there I was kinda safe. Guess not.

It doesn't have to be online for it to be stolen. If the card leaves your sight at a restaurant/bar/etc, you might as well give the information away.

Debit cards are nice, but you don't get near the protection that you would get from a credit card.

I'm with LC, you really don't have much control over your card number. Even visa's card verification thing when you shop online isn't all that great. It won't let me put a real password in there. I mean, who creates a password system that only allows one symbol in passwords? I'd really like to set my password to "DROP TABLE "card_holder";", but they won't let me.

Just found out this weekend that this happened to me last week. Charges from outside the country appeared last Thursday and they shut down my card. Didn't find out until I tried to use it this weekend and it was denied.

I'm what you might consider "hyper-vigilant" whit my personal information and NEVER give out my credit card unless the website is secure and is a reputable company.

*sigh*

Yah, just goes to show you can try to be %100 on top of things with your card and it can still happen. We even cross-cut shred everything (mail and document wise) that leaves our house, even anything with our name and address on it...

The only things I can think of is that a website that has my CC got hacked ot some restraunt waiter got it, but *shrug* I don't think that would be outside the US charges... maybe?
