Who all uses pre-fab computers  Reply with quote

The advertisement recently added for gaming machines on here got me to thinking, who all uses a computer someone else built? It's been years since I have owned a computer built by anyone but myself, ( obviously besides my laptop ), and I assume it is the same with everyone else, but just curious.

My very first pc was a barebones kit, so all I did was put it together. Then I swapped out every part on it to upgrade. My current PC I just bought all the parts from a bunch of different companies... where I could get the best price and built it myself. And now, as you've seen I've modded some stuff. I'm still learning, but I plan to mod more and get more technical. As for my work pc, it's a Dell and so is my laptop. Otherwise... DIM. Do It Myself.

My first two PCs, a 386 and 486 were hand-me-downs on which I learned a lot of what I know today through trial and error (mostly error, but the 386 still runs last time I checked). I got out of HS, got a job then spent $3 grand on a top of the line P2 Dell. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but looking back it probably wasn't. (still using the Dell monitor, box and speakers six years later, so I guess it wasn't a total waste of money) My last three have been built from scratch and I doubt if I'll ever buy another pre-fab. Modding doesn't really appeal to me, so I haven't gone that route. I'd rather spend my time and money making it faster rather than prettier.

My first pc was an 8088. I got the parts from my dad's work (military). He'd bring home a mobo, then video, then a case... that's where I got started...

I've got a prebuilt gateway computer now. All the pre-installed gateway shit had to go, and I put some more memory in it and a better vid-card, and now it's great. Next time, I'm definately building my own, tho.

I got a Dell Deminsion 8100 way back when I was still in school, and a custom also. The Dell serves as a dedicated rig, mainly a storage place and it comes in handy when friends come over for some small-lan action. I got a custom rig now and all I gotta say is, never retail for me again. I paid wayyy to much for that damn dell computer and got jipped with oem shit.

My parents bought us a IBM K2 back in the day. I've built the last 3 iterations of my computer myself.

I KNEW I couldn't be the only one who feels this way. It just seems like I am.

Yes, spend money to make it faster and better. When I mod, I try to keep it cheap. I think I spent maybe $50 tops on stuff to pretty up my pc. I don't think that's too bad. Now... spending $200-300 or something like that to mod... that's crazy to me. Anywhooo....
