Parents and Technology  Reply with quote

My mother, for the past 3 months has been texting me a lot. Sometimes about serious stuff that isn't funny and sometimes stuff that one could reasonably laugh at. I was beginning to think my mother was bat shit insane because she would "lol" after the most serious of statements.

Turns out, she thought "lol" meant "lots of love." My mother isn't as insane as I thought, just behind the curve and a couple miles back. I'm gonna teach her "roflmao."

I don't know that they will, Brules. We've had to adapt the whole time. There was a point in my Parent's lives where technology was pretty stable, completely unlike the continued advancement we've seen and had to adapt to. So long as we keep adapting as we have we'll continue to be up on the tech trends and expressions. though I'm sure we'll occasionally use a few expressions that are too old for them to understand.

I'm sure our kids will look back on our lives and say the same thing. Then they will use their Brain-Computer-Interface to start up their fusor-powered vehicle and move it up to the front door for departure.

Of course pervasive BCI would be such a huge game-changer... who knows what happens at that point.

I liked how in the middle of the financial crisis, GM announced that they'll have driverless cars by 2015 or some shit. I wanted to send them a picture of a dealership with "Achievement Unlocked : Driverless Cars" on it

Nice, you should have done it!

I personally don't want a driverless car. I've dealt with enough computers to know I don't want my life to depend on one. A computerless car would be a better step, in my opinion.

Call me biased as I do like the simply joy of driving

But yeah completely agree cars that drive themselves are a dumb idea. Even today's cars do too much to remove the driver from control of the vehicle....

This is one of the reasons I wish I'd never sold my 79 Camaro.

Yeah, it was a pain, needed fairly constant maintenance. BUT, parts were cheap and it was extremely simple to work on. No computers to worry about, carb instead of picky-ass fuel injection. Very simple on off switches for everything.
