Couple 'a nice dual core Mini-ITX deals  Reply with quote

Need to make a small file server, firewall, email server, home web server, tiny computer for mom...?

SuperBiiz has the Asus AT5NM10-I Atom Dual-Core D510 Mini ITX Motherboard for $95 - 15% off with coupon code SUNSHINE15 [Exp 7/11] = $81 with free shipping. Includes an Atom D510 processor but you'll have to get everything else.

# Intel BOXD510MO Atom Dual-Core D510 Mini-ITX Mobo for $68 shipped w/ code

I've built several Mini-ITX projects, including a commodore 64 mod, jewelery box computer, decorative table top treasure chest, as well as a couple servers using mini-itx motherboards. They are fun. If I had some dough I'd be very interrested in getting either of these for a fun little project mod. I highly recommend making something that doesn't look like it should be a compiter into a computer (such as a cereal box or something).

How does the D510 performance compare to other CPUs?

Anand has a nice article about it here.

But to sum up, if you are looking for application performance, this is OK but a low end celeron will still be multiple times faster. For Video acceleration (such as for an HTPC) then you need to look elsewhere, at an Atom + ION configuration for instance.

However, the atom has never been about performance, its been about low power computing, and, finally, this pine trail version seems to have delivered on that front.

My Email server I run at the house draws 5-7W at the wall but that's with a Via processor based Mini-ITX. However, the performance of that via processor is pretty terrible compared to these Atoms. (And I think I paid around $180 for that motherboard+processor)

Hm.

I see some Pentium M mini-ITX units are $50 on ebay, too. Didn't know they were that cheap now.

Or, if you wanna roll your own mini-itx HTPC:

SuperBiiz has the ZOTAC GF9300-I-E LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9300 HDMI Mini ITX Intel Motherboard for $120 - $15 off with coupon code SUNSHINE15 [Exp 7/11] = $105 with free shipping. Based on the NVIDIA GeForce 9300 chipset and has 1x PCI-E x16 slot and built-in wifi. (processor not included)

Should be a heckuva lot fast than the atoms, but at a larger price premium.

The GeForce 9300 has some decent power to it. I built my dad an mATX 9300 based system last year and it's a champ.
