After agreeing to your bet, I decided I should go see what I'm getting myself into. So far today the DOW is -103.00‎. The NASDAQ is -21.8.

I suppose both markets could come back today for a combined growth sufficient to fill the boots of Brules' big talk.

I'll be the first to point out that the United States government, be it Republican or Democrat, is utterly incapable of any project so large as overhauling healthcare. They are pretty much incapable of anything at this point because of all the partisan and or selfish bullshit.

That leads me to my questions though:

Do poor people deserve healthcare?

Will you deserve healthcare when you retire?

Will you deserve healthcare if you get into some unexpected legal or medical situation and lose your job and insurance?

Will you deserve healthcare if it gets so expensive that nobody can afford it anymore? (my twin daughters were almost 3 months premature == $300,0000. They had no surgeries whatsover, that was just for them to sleep in a NICU for two months)

Our healthcare system is reasonably good regarding the quality of care provided. Currently if you go into an ER and have no insurance, or pretend not to, they still have to treat any serious injury before they throw you out.

The financial side of our healthcare is completely hosed. The leeches are already getting free healthcare.

Shit has to change in this country sooner or later. I really feel like the current generation of politicians, all of them, are shaming the heritage of a proud nation.

And just because I probably have a flamey reputation on this board...

How can someone claim to be Christian and still be against providing healthcare to everyone? Not specifically saying anyone here fits that, but I don't get the opportunity to ask many hardcore rightwing people that question. The New Testament is pretty blunt about turning the other cheek and giving all your shit away to lepers or something like that, and the healthcare debate has made the right-wing-christians-hate-poor-people thing more apparent perhaps.

And to contrast the $300,000 medical bill for a few months worth of services, let me paste some random 'lifetime earnings' google result of unknown accuracy:

high school graduates can expect, on average, to earn $1.2 million; those with a bachelor's degree, $2.1 million; and people with a master's degree, $2.5 million.

/agnostic
//has excellent health insurance
///insists that gangster rap ruined the country from the bottom and greed from the top

If people want to be charitable, they'll be charitable. Saying they're going to pay for something and then sending men with guns to their house if they don't is not charity.

Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government. The Federal government is a limited government, it has specific and enumerated duties. Charity is not one of them.

If you have the time, read this from Colonel Crockett:
http://www.juntosociety.com/patriotism/inytg.html

Just because I don't have something is no justification for our government to go and take forcibly from others on my behalf.

What about fire departments? Other than ensuring the safety of federal property there is no duty to put fires out.

As far as forcibly taking, I guess you're talking about not paying taxes? I'm actually all for allowing people to not pay any tax at all. However, those people can not leave their property or use any of the Unites States communication, transportation, or power infrastructure in any way.

I guess by living here and using those tax funded resources, you are effectively agreeing to pay your share of those programs. Tossing healthcare into the mix wouldn't cost that much more, if rampant greed had not destroyed the affordability of that service.

With very careful regulation and improved competition in the market, the price could easily come back down. The artificial inflation of the prices of health services are what really needs killed. I'm already aware that whatever is going through Congress right now is unlikely to provide for any of that.

That's a power vested in the states, not in the Federal government.

That is in no way cogent to the discussion.

If you agreed to everything the government did, you wouldn't need to vote.
Healthcare and charity are not within the Constitutional authority of the Federal government.

I'll assume that you already know where libertarians stand on most regulation and leave it at that.

LC let us agree to disagree then.

Dan, it lost another 200 today. Should have made a followup bet.

/pretty sure we are screwed at this point no matter who is in charge
///guns, gold, and defensible property are always good investments
