First system arch upgrade in 9 years...  Reply with quote

So, I finally was able to sequester some funds from the family budget and thought Skylake + DDR4 was good enough reason to put out some hondo's towards some new hardware.

Here is what I got:

Motherboard
Memory
Processor
$353.96 after shipping!

Got them all in yesterday and ripped out my Core2Duo E6600 mobo, proc and memory and slapped in their replacements. WOW what a diference. Smile

My SSD's really came alive going from SATA3 to SATA6. I also now have an M.2 pciex4 slot for my next storage upgrade. Can't wait. So I went from my system bottlenecking my HD7850 vid to my HD7850 bottlenecking my system lol. I almost regret not geting the i5-6600k for overclocking but maybe an i7 in the distant future when they are the old thing on the block.

Ho well.

Actually, as I found out during the build, that a 9 year old motherboard has a different CPU (ATX) power socket on the motherboard than a brand spankin new (or several year old for that matter) motherboard. My old PSU had a 4 pin ATX power plug and my new motherboard takes an 8 pin.

I just really lucked out, though. As it turns out back in 2014 I purchased this new PSU for my son's PC and it turned out not to need it so it was still sealed up in the box on the floor. It did have the correct power plugs. woohoo!!!
