Why aren't monitors square? (1:1)  Reply with quote

I mean... like, really. Why aren't they square? I'm sitting here looking at my monitor thinking, geeze, it would be so nice if I just had my monitor but as tall as it is wide (same PPI). It would proffer more desktop/window realestate AND do everything it can do now.... Granted, any TV/film would have black bars top and bottom but I view so little of that kind of stuff on my actual PC monitor that it verges on NEVER. Even if FPS games I would just be seeing more sky and ground than I am now it still might be better. *shrug*

Just a boredom thought...

Practical Limitations and Cinema Terminology explain how the common aspect ratios evolved.

Yes,
I understand where the "standards" came from... but why are they still relevant, especially in the computer monitor field?

A 4:3 ratio mimics human eyesight visual angle of 155°h x 120°v, that is 4:3.075

I don't see you trying to answer his question. Not much point in trying to explain when there's already a thoroughly researched and cited source for the information.

Always liked the line in the Simpsons. It being unscripted just makes it.

They are LCDs, 20" wide and 20" tall, 2048x2048. I have a few extras if anyone wants one. I can give you a deal on them, but it will still be 5 figures each Wink
